PMAC STOL (Short Takeoff & Landing)

PMAC’s 2nd annual STOL event. S.T.O.L. meaning Short Take Off and Landing. Our first year’s event proved to be quite entertaining for both pilots and spectators. Join us for a day of thrills and spills flying model airplanes on the edge of the their flight envelope attempting to take off and land in the shortest possible distance.

PMAC is always open to spectators and the grill will be serving food and refreshments.

The rules for the PMAC STOL contest is as follows…

4 classes of aircraft will compete.

Classes

1. Unlimited Class

-36" wingspan and up.

-Anything goes...reverse thrust, brakes, anchors, grappling hooks, rocket motors. Innovation is encouraged but safety is #1.

2. Monster Class

-60" wing and up.

-Aircraft must use conventional means of propulsion and stop without any assistance.

3. Sport Class

-30” wingspan minimum, under 60” wingspan maximum.

-Aircraft must use conventional means of propulsion and stop without any assistance.

4. Low wing Civilian/Warbird Class.

-Must be a scale or stand off scale civilian or warbird model.

-Minimum wingspan 24", no maximum.

-Aircraft must use conventional means of propulsion and stop without any assistance.

Registration

1. You will be assigned your airplanes competition class upon registration. Competition classes are outlined above.

2. Pilots may compete with multiple aircraft but must be able to do so in a way that does not hinder the competition.

3. Pilots may share an aircraft, but each pilot’s score will count for that competitor and do so in a way that does not hinder the competition.

Event Guidelines

1. Contestants line up in the staging area and each contestant gets 3 attempts in rotation with the other planes doing one take off and landing at a time. Upon landing, return to the staging area in the back of the line.

2. Each aircraft must start from a stopped position no farther forward than the front edge of the designated reference line with at least one main landing gear tire touching the line and land on or after the designated reference line. Main gear touchdown prior to the rear edge of the reference line is disqualifying. Tail wheel touchdown prior to the reference line is NOT disqualifying.

3. At any time a pilot may choose to land or take off from the runway or the grass.

4. “Go Arounds” are common real-world safety decisions. If conditions deteriorate on short approach and you are too close to the edge of the safe flight envelope, GO AROUND. For the STOL competition, a “Go Around” is encouraged and expected. If no contact of any landing gear has been made, the pilot can circle around for a second landing attempt and still be scored. The competition director has the sole discretion to determine if the pilot is abusing this rule and may DQ a pilot for that round. (More than two go arounds will be heavily frowned upon)

5. A DQ on landing will eliminate the score from that round. If a competitor DQs on all rounds, he or she will not have a valid score for that class’s event.

6. Any "crash" where there may be a real world possibility of a pilot injury or damaged aircraft i.e. flipping over or broken landing gear will result in a DQ. Questionable crashes are subject to the discretion of the Competition Director or any of the line judges.

Event Placements

1. Each competition class will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners (pending sufficient registration) at each event.

2. Winners will be based on their best lowest COMBINED score (combination of one take off and landing) distance.

3. Prizes may vary from class to class and event to event.
